Is a lab grown sapphire a real sapphire?
The short answer: Yes. A lab grown sapphire is corundum, the identical crystal, chemistry, and hardness as a mined sapphire. The only differences are where it formed, how long it took, and what it costs.
What the two have in common
Aluminium oxide, a 9 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index, the same colors from the same trace elements. Iron and titanium make blue in both. A gemologist tells them apart by growth patterns and inclusions, not by anything you can see at arm’s length.
What actually differs
A mined stone carries geologic time and a specific patch of earth. A grown stone carries identical light at a fraction of the price. Resale is thin for both and almost nonexistent for grown stones, so buy either one to wear, not to trade.
