From the studio · Stones, plainly
Worn by: Lena, who gets stopped by strangers
The short answer: Five questions for the people who wear the work. This month: Lena, Brooklyn, who bought the Spinel Band for herself two winters ago and has added two rings since. Interviews are edited for length only; the opinions stay theirs.

What made you buy the first one?
Honestly, the passport. I had never had a jeweler put in writing what the stone was and was not. I bought the gray spinel because the paper respected me.
How do you actually wear it?
Every day, including the gym, which I was told is fine because spinel is an 8. It sits with my grandmother’s wedding band. They argue a little. I like that.
What do strangers say?
They ask if it is a diamond and I get to say no, it is better for me. Gray spinel is the introvert’s diamond. That line is mine; the studio may keep it.
What did you add since?
The Storm Signet, engraved, and a citrine I have not set yet. It lives in its parcel paper in my desk. Opening it is a small holiday.
What should someone buy first?
Whatever color follows you around. Do not start with the occasion. Start with the color and the occasion will find it.
